Experimental — in development

Lucidity and me..

A lucid dream is just a dream where you know, while it is happening, that it is a dream. That flicker of awareness looks like a trainable habit of mind, not a trick any gadget performs on you — the mask and the app exist to give the habit a fair chance, nothing more.

This page is the honest version of a personal question: could I actually learn to know, mid-dream, that I am dreaming? We do not have that answer yet — only a practice worth trying, and a system built not to lie to us about how it is going.

A crescent moon with a faint pulse A crescent moon glows softly in a starry night sky, above a faint heartbeat line drifting quietly along the bottom of the scene — the same signal the app is always half-listening to.

What we know

REM sleep, dreaming, and where the cue idea comes from.

None of this is proprietary to SoluneFit. It is mainstream sleep science, and we would rather explain it plainly than dress it up.

  • Most vivid, story-like dreaming happens in REM sleep. You can dream in other stages too, but the long, narrative dreams people usually mean by “a dream” cluster in REM.
  • REM periods get longer as the night goes on. The first one is short, sometimes just a few minutes. By the last part of the night they stretch out considerably — which is why the final stretch before waking is the one worth paying attention to.
  • A cue delivered during REM can be woven into the dream. Studies since the 1980s have played light or sound to sleeping people and found the sleeper sometimes builds it into whatever they are already dreaming — a flashing light becomes lightning, a tone becomes a doorbell.
  • Sometimes that recognition is enough to trigger lucidity. For a share of people, noticing the cue inside the dream is what makes them realize they are dreaming. The effect is real and has been replicated, but it is modest on average and swings a great deal from person to person, and night to night.
  • An untrained cue does much less. The stronger results come after the person rehearses the exact cue while awake, pairing it with the intention to notice it later. A cue nobody has practiced with is close to a flash that means nothing.

Said plainly: lucid dreaming is a genuine, studied phenomenon, and cueing can help. The honest description is “sometimes helps some people, more with practice,” not a mechanism anyone has made dependable.

What SoluneFit does today

The practice, and the honest scaffolding around it.

Everything below is either working in development builds or being actively built. None of it is released yet, and none of it promises a lucid dream.

The cue Trained, not guessed

  • Cue training. Before the mask ever fires overnight, you rehearse the exact light-and-sound signal while awake, at a personal “barely noticeable” threshold — the level you can only just perceive. An untrained cue is just a flash; this is the part the research says actually matters.
  • Delivered through a compatible mask. The app drives a light-and-sound sleep mask over Bluetooth. We do not manufacture the hardware — we orchestrate what it does, and cueing has a switch to turn it off entirely.
  • A timed-window mode, as the honest alternative. If you would rather not lean on any live estimate, cues can simply run on a schedule inside the part of the night REM periods tend to concentrate in — no claim about what is happening in your brain right now, just a window that tends to be a good one.

The scorecard What judges it

  • A REM estimate — experimental. The app can estimate REM likelihood from your wearable’s heart-rate and movement signals and can time cues to it. It is labeled experimental because it is: we have not yet validated it against a real measurement of REM on real nights, including our own, so it should not be trusted more than the timed-window mode above.
  • The morning log. A short, honest question — “Did the cue reach you?” — plus a place to write the dream down while it is fresh, sorted into lucid, semi-lucid or not lucid. This log, not a confidence number, is what actually tells you whether any of this is doing anything for you.
  • Everything on-device. Cue settings, the dream log and the REM estimate all stay on your phone. No cloud step sits between you and your own dream.

What we will not promise

  • We do not detect REM reliably yet. What the app shows is an estimate, and it is labeled as one everywhere it appears.
  • We do not promise lucid dreams. Some nights, for some people, nothing happens at all.
  • Cues can wake you. That is a real cost of trying this, not a rare edge case.
  • Anyone who promises lucid dreams on demand is guessing. So would we, if we said it.

The journey

This is a practice, not a feature.

Every published route into lucid dreaming runs through the same slow habits. The mask and the app support them; they do not replace them.

The dream log

Write down whatever you remember the moment you wake, even one fragment. Dream recall is a skill, and close to a prerequisite — you cannot notice a pattern in dreams you never wrote down.

Dream signs & reality checks

Read the log back for your own recurring oddities — a dream sign. Then build a small daytime habit of actually asking “am I dreaming?” and checking. Do it enough while awake and it starts happening inside dreams too.

Cue training

Pair the mask’s cue with that same question at bedtime, at your barely noticeable threshold, so the signal has something to mean if it reaches you during the cue window near the end of the night.

Patience

Most people who get somewhere with this take weeks, not nights. A quiet stretch is not proof it is failing — it is most of what the practice actually looks like.

Come along for the practice.

We’ll write honestly about how the cueing experiments go — including the nights it does nothing. Check the lucid-dreaming box on the follow page and those updates will find you first.
